The Kerala backwaters are a fishing haven, and there are several spots you can explore while on a houseboat. Each area has its charm, and the variety of fish is plentiful. Here are some of the best spots I recommend:

1. Alleppey (Alappuzha) Backwaters

Alleppey is often called the “Venice of the East” because of its intricate network of canals and lagoons. As you cruise through this picturesque town on your houseboat, you’ll find yourself surrounded by lush coconut groves and rice fields. The backwaters here are home to a variety of fish species, including the mighty ‘Kuttanadu Karimeen’ (Pearl Spot), which is a local delicacy.

During my visit to Alleppey, I had the pleasure of fishing in the calm waters near Punnappra. The scenery was simply breathtaking, and within an hour, I hooked a decent-sized Pearl Spot. It was my first real catch, and I was hooked (pun intended) on the experience! The joy of reeling in a fish from Kerala’s backwaters is something that will stay with you forever.

2. Kumarakom

Kumarakom, known for its bird sanctuary and tranquil backwaters, is another top destination for fishing. It’s ideal for those seeking a more secluded and peaceful environment. The area is rich in biodiversity, and you’ll find fish like the Barramundi and Tilapia here.

I fondly remember my fishing excursion at Kumarakom. The serene surroundings, combined with the quiet solitude, made for a perfect fishing experience. I spent hours casting my line, enjoying the stillness of the backwaters. And when I finally caught a Barramundi, I couldn’t help but feel a deep sense of connection to the waters. Kumarakom’s fishing spots are definitely worth a visit.

3. Vembanad Lake

Vembanad Lake is one of the largest lakes in Kerala and is an excellent location for fishing on Kerala’s houseboats. The lake stretches across several districts, offering ample opportunities to fish in its deep waters. The lake is home to species like the fresh-water carp, catfish, and the famous Karimeen.

On one of my trips, I had the chance to fish on a houseboat cruising over Vembanad Lake. The vast expanse of water surrounded by hills and lush vegetation made the experience feel like I was on a different planet. It wasn’t long before I caught a beautiful freshwater carp, which added a perfect end to the day. The beauty of Vembanad is its peacefulness, and fishing here feels like stepping into a dream.

4. Kottayam Backwaters

Kottayam is another gem that should be on every fishing enthusiast’s list. Its backwaters are quiet, picturesque, and full of fish. The tranquil surroundings, with paddy fields stretching along the water’s edge, make Kottayam a prime spot for fishing. This area is especially known for its plentiful supply of freshwater fish, including Carp and Tilapia.

My experience fishing in Kottayam was peaceful yet exciting. With just the sounds of nature around me, I lost track of time as I tried different spots, casting my line into the crystal-clear waters. I was rewarded with a decent-sized Tilapia that I proudly added to my catch. This place is truly an angler’s paradise.
